Dr. DuVinage came to the University of Maryland, College Park from The George Washington University, where he was founding director of the GW Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research and a deputy director and lecturer in the University Honors Program. Prior to joining GW he served as director of accreditation for an association of liberal arts colleges and programs.
As an undergraduate at Yale University Dr. DuVinage studied British and American history. He later earned a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. His dissertation explored Edmund Burke's principles and practice of statesmanship, especially in response to the French Revolution. Work on this disseratation was supported by a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. While at Chicago Dr. DuVinage taught extensively in the Humanities Core and coordinated an undergraduate major, “Fundamentals: Issues and Texts.”
Dr. DuVinage was born in the Dominican Republic to South American parents and, apart from a brief interlude in New Jersey, grew up there and in Puerto Rico.
Prior to her position with the National Scholarships Office, Dr. Brice taught courses in the arts of Africa and the African Diaspora at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. She earned a B.S. in art and art history from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and later a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her dissertation examined the roles of history and narrative in the arts of Haitian Vodou. Her continuing research into the visual culture of Haiti and the African Atlantic world has inspired her return to making art.
