Ann C. Smith : Interim Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies

An Instructor in the Department of Microbiology /Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics since 1987, she has served as Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs and Director of Undergraduate Programs. Her teaching has been in the department’s large lecture general microbiology class, and from this experience she has developed an interest in engaging students in learning science in large enrollment courses. Smith has investigated the use of technology (eg WebCT and clickers), teaching with case studies, and employing teamwork for teaching (where teams of faculty, graduate TA’s and undergraduate TA’s act together on the “teacher side” and teams of students work collaboratively on the “learner side”) as tools to facilitate active learning. In 2002 along with colleagues teaching General Microbiology she received the University of Maryland Teaching with Technology Award. She is a UM Lily Fellow and is currently working on an initiative with other CBMG faculty to improve student learning experiences in courses that target Host Pathogen Interactions.

Smith enjoys working with student groups such as the UM chapter for American Society for Microbiology, and the Stamp Union Advisory Board. Ann is a Faculty 21 member of Project Kaleidoscope, and since 2003 she has served as a member of American Society for Microbiology Committee on Technology Enhanced Education and Editor of the /MicrobeLibrary/.org Visual Resources Collection. Smith received her B.A. in Biology at the College of Wooster, Wooster OH and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Rochester, Rochester, N. Y.
