James N. Newton: Interim Director of Educational Talent Search
and Equity Officer for Undergraduate
Studies
James N. Newton is an Assistant to the Associate
Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean for Undergraduate
Studies. He is currently serving as the Interim Director of Educational Talent Search
and Equity Officer for Undergraduate
Studies. He began his professional career, however,
as a high school mathematics teacher. Between
these two appointments he has served the University
of Maryland wearing different hats including that
of mathematics instructor, Director of the Center
for Minorities in Science and Engineering, and
campus Director of Minority Affairs.
Mr. Newton has had the opportunity to serve the
campus in varied capacities. He has been a member
of the President’s Commission on Ethnic
Minority Issues and has served as the president
of the university system’s chapter of the
National Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi. As a member
of the staff of what is now the Office of Continuing
and Extended Education, he has worked with education
programs for off-campus organizations.
He is the equity administrator for the Office
of Undergraduate Studies, and he represents
the unit on the campus Equity Council. He
works with colleagues in UGST to resolve
student problems that are brought to the
Office of the Dean, and he serves the office
of the president and the provost in the same
capacity.
