Undergraduate Studies
and Director of CORE Planning and Implementation
As Assistant to the Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Laura Slavin works closely with the Dean and Associate Dean. As Director of CORE Planning and Implementation she oversees the activities necessary to maintain and improve the CORE Liberal Arts and Sciences Studies Program (CORE), the University's general education curriculum, frequently developing new ways to enhance processes and services. She serves on the Senate Committee on CORE and works closely with its subcomittees, with academic colleges and departments, and the many offices and individuals involved with the CORE curriculum.
Prior to joining the Office of Undergraduate Studies in 1990, she worked in promotional, advising, and administrative positions for UM programs and offices including: the Returning Students Program; General Studies Program; College of Library and Information Services, and Department of Computer Science. She is a former chair of the President’s Commission on Women’s Issues and serves as a judicial board member, and as an interviewer for pre-med and pre-dental students. Ms. Slavin received her B.G.S., M.A., and MBA degrees from the University of Maryland. Her academic and administrative experiences at College Park have given her a valuable perspective on the campus as a dynamic and interactive community.
