Who Can Apply: U.S. citizens or permanent residents; seniors, recent grads, MS or PhD students who will not have completed the PhD before grant period; and biomedical engineering or bioengineering majors. Applicants must have language ability to carry out the proposed project in the host country at the time of departure.

IMPORTANT: Applicants must be nominated by the Dean of a School or Chair of the biomedical engineering department at their current or most recent degree granting institution.

Description: The Whitaker International Fellows Program sends emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their own careers within the field. In the first five years of the Whitaker Program, grants have been awarded to conduct projects in over 25 countries worldwide.

Biomedical engineers know that as work in the field becomes more refined, the best place to study or conduct research is not always in the U.S. Although there are currently few opportunities to go abroad to leverage international expertise, the Whitaker International Fellows Program makes available just such an opportunity.

Biomedical engineers can use the Whitaker International Fellows Program to go overseas to help further their careers, and the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include: conducting research at an academic institution; interning at a policy institute; and establishing ties between home and host institutions.

Award Amount: Round trip international airfare; a monthly living stipend; Health & Accident insurance; Tuition (and bench fees) reimbursement, capped at US$10,000 (regardless of country of exchange or exchange rate). Individual reimbursement amounts are determined by the Whitaker Program at the time of grant award (see details).

Duration: The term of the award will be for a maximum of one academic year (as defined by the academic calendar of the host country).

To foster the sharing of information and the development of a community of international fellows and scholars, interaction among recipients is encouraged during their grant tenure. Grantees are invited to an Annual Enrichment Seminar in the Spring where they are asked to make presentations on their research projects and experiences during the grant tenure. Guidelines for presentations are emailed in advance.

National Deadline: January 19, 2016
