Who Can Apply: U.S. Citizens – 18 years or older – 3.0+ GPA – willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense; pursuing an undergraduate degree in one of the fields listed below.

 

Description: The Science, Mathematics and Research (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion.

Students pursuing degrees related to the following are encouraged to apply:

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering
Biosciences
Chemical Engineering
Chemistry
Civil Engineering
Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences
Computer and Computational Sciences

Electrical Engineering
Geosciences
Industrial and Systems Engineering (technical tracks only)
Information Sciences
Materials Science and Engineering
Mathematics

Mechanical Engineering
Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
Nuclear Engineering
Oceanography
Operations Research (technical tracks only)
Physics

Service Obligation: Applicants must be able to participate in summer internships at the Department of Defense laboratories and willing to accept post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense.

Award Amount: Participants in the SMART scholarship for Service Program receive: full tuition and education-related fees (does not include items such as meal plans, housing, or parking); stipend paid at a rate of $25,000 - $38,000 depending on degree pursuing; paid summer internships; health insurance allowance up to $1,200 per calendar year; book allowance of $1,000 per academic year; mentoring; and employment placement after graduation.
