Who Can Apply: US Citizens and nationals – Graduating Seniors, Recent Grads, Graduate Students (with less than one full year of completed studies) – Major in a science, engineering or math field

Description:The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a highly competitive, portable fellowship that is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals who intend to pursue a doctoral degree in one of fifteen supported disciplines. NDSEG confers high honors upon its recipients, and allows them to attend whichever U.S. institution they choose. NDSEG Fellowships last for three years and pay for full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and up to $1,000 a year in medical insurance (this excludes dental and vision insurance.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is committed to increasing the number and quality of our nation's scientists and engineers, and towards this end, has awarded approximately 4,000 NDSEG fellowships since the program's inception in 1989. The NDSEG Fellowship is sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Army Research Office (ARO), the High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCM), and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), under the direction of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E).

The following disciplines are eligible::

Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering – Biosciences – Chemical Engineering – Chemistry – Civil Engineering – Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences – Computer and Computational Sciences – Electrical Engineering – Geosciences – Materials Science and Engineering –
Mathematics – Mechanical Engineering – Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering –
Oceanography – Physics

The DoD is also interested in supporting the education of future scientists and engineers in a number of interdisciplinary areas. Applicants interested in pursuing study in interdisciplinary areas should apply under one of the disciplines listed above and indicate their specific areas of interest in the "Summary of Goals" statement in the application.

Program Preferences: NDSEG Fellowships will be awarded on the basis of academic and overall ability in the areas of interest to the DoD. Each application is evaluated by a panel having expertise in the science or engineering discipline of the applicant's proposed advanced degree program.

For more specific information about research areas of interest to the DoD, please consult the Broad Agency Announcements of the Army Research Office, the Office of Naval Research, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Award Amount: The DoD will pay the fellow's full tuition and required fees (not to include room and board) for three years. In addition, fellows receive a stipend a monthly stipend ($38,400 annually), and a $5,000 travel budget over the Fellow's tenure for professional development.

The NDSEG Fellowship Program will also pay for the medical insurance coverage offered through the institution, up to a total value of $1,200 per year (this excludes dental and vision insurance). Any excess insurance costs will be the responsibility of the fellow.

Duration: The normal length of an NDSEG Fellowship is 36 consecutive months.
