Description: Marshall Scholarships support young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study for two years either at the graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at a UK institution in any field of study. The scheme allows the Scholars, who are the potential leaders, opinion-formers and decision-makers in their own country to gain an understanding and appreciation of British values and the British way of life. It also establishes long-lasting ties between the peoples of Britain and the United States. In appointing scholars the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, and for candidates who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society.

Founded by a 1953 Act of Parliament, and named in honour of US Secretary of State George C Marshall, the Scholarships commemorate the humane ideals of the Marshall Plan and they express the continuing gratitude of the British people to their American counterparts.

• To motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British-American understanding.
