Who Can Apply: US Citizens, Permanent Residents – Seniors, Recent Grads, First-year Graduate Students – Must be students of the applied physical sciences and be seeking graduate study in an eligible field (see below)

IMPORTANT: The Foundation does not support study in pursuit of the M.D. Degree or work in descriptive biology, although it may support the Ph.D. portion of a joint M.D./Ph.D. study program.

IMPORTANT: Hertz Graduate Fellowships may only be used for studies at a list of pre-approved graduate universities. Here is the complete list of eligible schools.

Description: The Hertz Graduate Fellowship supports graduate students working towards the Ph.D. degree in the applied physical and engineering sciences, as well as those aspects of modern biology which apply the physical sciences intensively. It is important to stress that the term ‘applied sciences’ in this context is broadly construed to mean fields of endeavor in which one applies, invents, and/or develops results from the basic physical sciences to generate solutions to problems of comparatively near-term, widespread human interest.

Program Preferences: Fellowship applicants are screened for qualities that are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment and/or reasonably reliable leading indicators of future professional success, including: exceptional intelligence and creativity in scientific and engineering work; excellent technical education as demonstrated by transcripts, reference letters, and by a personal, technical interview; extraordinary accomplishments which may offset slightly lower academic records, or add luster to outstanding ones; features of temperament and character conducive to high attainment as a technical professional; and appropriate moral and ethical values

Service Obligation: Acceptance of a Hertz Graduate Fellowship includes a statement that the Fellow makes a moral commitment to make his or her "skills available to the United States in times of national emergency." Please note that this is not a legal or contractual obligation, but rather a freely given moral commitment. Details regarding this voluntary commitment click are here.

Award Amount: The Graduate Fellowship Award is based on merit (not need) and consists of a cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend (up to $37,000 annually). The cost-of-education allowance is accepted by all of the tenable schools in lieu of all fees and tuition. Successful applicants have a choice of two fellowship options:
