Description:The U.S. Department of Homeland Security sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals. It is open to undergraduate students in a broad spectrum of HS-STEM disciplines and DHS mission-relevant research areas. The ultimate goal of the program is to engage a diverse, educated and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM areas and to promote long-term relationships between students, researchers, DHS and research facilities to enhance the HS-STEM workforce.
Homeland security research areas include: explosives detection, mitigation and response; social, behavioral, and economic sciences; risk and decision sciences; human factors; chemical threats and countermeasures; food and agriculture security; transportation security; border security; immigration studies; maritime and port security; infrastructure protection; natural disasters and related geophysical studies; emergency preparedness and response; communications and interoperability; advanced data analysis and visualization.
Participants are required to participate in a poster session and/or make an oral presentation to the scientific community at the hosting venue. In addition, an eight to ten page paper about the summer experience and an evaluation form is required at the end of the internship.
The DHS Education Program is managed by ORAU through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) under an agreement between DHS and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE. ORAU manages the application and review process, notification and implementation of the program.
Award: The award includes a stipend of $600/week ($6,000 for 10 weeks), roundtrip airfare between the participants home address and the assigned federal research facility. All living expenses, including local transportation, room, board, and entertainment are the responsibility of the participants.
