Who Can Apply: Students majoring in engineering, physics, computer science, mathematics or other related majors with at least a 3.0 GPA who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents. Students should be interested in pursuing a graduate degree.
Description: Spend your summer working with researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, one of the world’s leading research organizations. Gain valuable experience, work with cutting-edge technology, and meet students from all over the county. You will work in one of the nine NIST laboratories:

The SURF Program dates depend on the location; adjustments may be made to accommodate specific academic schedules (e.g., a limited number of 9-week slots). There is one in Gaithersburg, MD (www.nist.gov/surf/surf-gaithersburg) and one in Boulder, CO (www.nist.gov/surf/surf-boulder).
Award: The stipend is $5,500. Housing and travel are provided for out-of-state students or students who live to far away too commute.
