CORE Course Approval and Periodic Review
There is a formal proposal process for courses seeking CORE approval. The academic
department or program, that offers the course, submits proposal forms and supporting
materials for review by the University Senate CORE Committee. Approved courses
participate in periodic review by submitting requested materials for a review
portfolio. Approval and review processes demonstrate the University of Maryland’s
continuing commitment to the quality of undergraduate education.
The CORE Periodic Review process has brought good things to CORE and has served
students well. Faculty, their academic departments, and colleges have made many
improvements in CORE courses through their participation in and response to
CORE Periodic Review. Here are just a few:
- Added helpful information to syllabi;
- Increased coordination of discussion sections;
- Developed teaching assistant and mentoring mechanisms;
- Increased faculty meetings with teaching assistants for their courses;
- Added discussion sections or reduced section sizes when possible;
- Created innovative active learning elements;
- Added more analytical and problem-solving assignments, and
- Strengthened writing components of courses.
